Newsletter (#20) - July 2012

n Welcome...

....despite the terrible summer weather thus far.  Except if you're on the Isle of Uist off the Scottish West Coast - where they've had just 5mm of rain & are desperate for the stuff.
Fingers crossed for a great Autumn!

Always consult your Doctor, Vet or Professional.

n  Olympic & August/Early September Delays

Royal Mail & the Couriers are warning of delays for parcels during these periods (right up to 8th September!) - whether from road closures, staff absence during the Games & school holidays, etc.
In August we too struggle with 'holidays' - so if you'd like to order, if you can order early, it'll help (online orders are always quicker than phone)!

AND, to any of you competing, assisting or attending the Olympics, the VERY best of luck from all at Team R&S!

n  Probiotics & 'Athletes' - Human (or animal)

A recent article from www.nutraingredients.com* summarises the following points from studies of human athletes - which we feel is totally relevant for other species, horses, dogs, greyhounds, racing camels etc!

Exercise can suppress the body’s immune response.

The connection between probiotics & immune support is well documented & an obvious application of their use in ‘sports nutrition’ would be to counteract this.

High protein supplementation may cause gastrointestinal distress.

Probiotics can potentially improve protein utilisation, and may therefore help to produce an increase in muscle mass/strength.

Probiotics may have an influence on neurotransmitters & hormones involved in improving responses to physical & mental stress.

What’s the relevance?

  • Fundamentally, if a consumer can purchase a single product that has two [or more] functional uses at a better price point than the components purchased separately, it’s a huge plus" Daniel Pierce told Nutraingredients.com at the Probiotics Association’s recent World Congress in California.

  • He continued "More probiotics are likely to be seen in traditional sports nutrition products because overall health & immune health awareness & performance nutrition are becoming one & the same”.

Competition & Event-Venue Challenges.

The body’s wellbeing & gut function are often compromised, for example:

‘unnatural’& irregular feeding regimes in preparation for competition,

excess protein,

stress involved in travelling as well as general stress,

disturbed sleep,

water contamination/changes,

potential sources of infection at competition venues, etc.

Ways to Optimise the Odds of Success and Good Health

A.  Adding a ‘pure’ & highly tasty probiotic supplement (i.e. with NO cereal/unnecessary fillers and of an appropriate ‘intensity’ to be of use to the body) to your horse’s feed, can help to maintain his natural immunity, performance ability & wellbeing despite all that it’s experiencing.

Choose Protexin Equine Premium Gut Balancer or QuickFix paste.

BDitto for the human (or dog) athlete.

      Choose Protexin Bio-Kult capsules.

C.  'Pure' probiotics that are supplemented at beneficial amounts (e.g. the above three Protexin products), are totally non-invasive and contain no banned substances under FEI & BHA regulations.

Ruggles & Stopitall Ltd have long agreed with all the above but that ‘connecting of the dots’ in this way is still 'relatively new' outside of the research worlds….

n  Injury.  Recovery & OM3 - NEW research

From the Alltech Symposium, Lexington, Kentucky, USA - 2012 - Tania Cubitt, PhD.

When your horse (or dog or even yourself!) is on restricted exercise or is ‘box resting’ due to injury, his day to day regime will be very different from his normal working life.

1.  We all know about rest and time to recover, but

2.  do we also know the importance of diet during the healing process (also relevant for any living body, animal or human!), and

3.  reducing sugar intake?

When injured the body's nutritional requirements WILL increase, due to the energy demands of healing.

Omega 3 is a key element in a body's ability to self-heal quickly...but as we've long said, it's also frequently deficient in most human & animal bodies.  Continue reading Ms Cubitt's finding... click HERE.

  • Basically, try to reduce intake or cut it out by checking ingredients labels (especially pet treats or as 'molasses' in horse feeds) - with human foods just look at the brightly coloured lists on the sides of the packets or boxes!

Stressed Traveller - Human, Dog, Horse (Alpaca, Donkey)
  • If you can help calm the ‘butterflies’, we know from personal experience how a calmer tummy helps us cope with stress….
  • A study by the Japan Racing Association’s Equine Research Institute  revealed that stress levels of horses during transport (road & air), caused major spikes in the heart rate of study horses compared to when in rest..
  • Because stress affects the gut so detrimentally (animal & human!), AND, the gut runs around 70% of an animal’s immune system responses, we suggest some easy, affordable, competition legal &  non-invasive ‘internal’ supports..

 Tick Alert - it's a HORRENDOUS year!

Whether in Dartmoor, Scotland, France, the Sussex heathlands or even our gardens anywhere in the UK, this year no one nor any animal is safe from ticks.
  • The Veterinary world and the National & Local media are all trying to warn us to be really careful this year - the main 'disease' that is caused by ticks is utterly horrendous...as your immune system goes crazy & it's all but impossible to pin it down to a tick bite...
  • If you can help deter them, it's better than being completely exposed - a little Ruggle-it offers a gentle, non-invasive & efficient deterrent or an effective way to get rid of them if you pick one up!

Pet Incontinence - try Flaxseed Oil says US Vet!

A surprisingly common pet health issue is pet incontinence.  Whether your dear dog wakes up in the morning with a puddle of urine beside her or she might dribble urine whilst walking, her inability to 'manage herself' is ghastly.
  • Guilt – the confused & guilty look in her eyes can break any heart as she just doesn’t understand;
  • Hair loss & burns – as the acids burn her skin.

Pioneering US Vet Dr Andrew Jones is a firm believer in the power of 'pure' Flaxseed oil to help - thanks to its natural richness in Plant Estrogens.
